Homemade French Onion Dip

I’ve tried so many homemade cold onion dips and I just couldn’t nail it. I’ve made regular onion dip, caramelized onion dip, loaded onion dip, bacon onion dip—you name it. But nothing ever topped the store-bought version. Until now! This is the onion dip that knocks all the others out of the park!

Notes

Ingredient Substitutions: 🔄 Yellow onion → White onion, sweet onion, or shallots (will taste a little milder but still great) 🔄 Unsalted butter → Salted butter (just skip the added salt later), or olive oil 🔄 Olive oil → More butter 🔄 Cream cheese → Boursin, goat cheese, or even Greek yogurt for a tangier twist 🔄 Sour cream → Full-fat Greek yogurt or crème fraîche 🔄 Mayonnaise → Greek yogurt or more sour cream if you’re mayo-averse, but honestly mayo is the backbone here 🔄 Grated Parmesan → You can just skip! 🔄 Lipton French Onion Soup Mix → DIY it: garlic powder + onion powder + a pinch of beef bouillon or Worcestershire Make ahead tips: This dip is best when made the day before hand because it gives the soup mix time to hydrate. Otherwise the onions in the soup mix will still be freeze dried.
